Why is there a Huracan Spyder and an Aventador Roadster?

What’s the difference between a spyder and a roadster?

The terms roadster and spyder are synonymous with performance cars the world over, but what do those two terms actually mean? What’s the difference between a spyder and a roadster and how does that relate to the latest Lamborghini lineup? We have your answers here.

What is a spyder?Lamborghini Aventador Roadster top off overhead view

No, a spyder is not some fancy name for an eight-legged arachnid. Spyder is largely a European term referring to two-seat two-door vehicles with a top down option. Typically a spyder is a convertible, meaning you can put the top up, however for most car companies a convertible is typically just a standard car with the top chopped off and little consideration put into the rest of the vehicle’s design.

When is the Lamborghini Urus coming?

A spyder on the other hand, means that the designers and the engineers put a little more thought into it than that. They try to keep the essence of the car the same except with a top down feel. Such is accomplished with the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder.

What is a roadster?

A roadster is very similar to a spyder in a lot of ways. Traditionally a roadster is a two-door two-seat vehicle without a top. However, most modern roadsters still have a top up option. Oftentimes a modern roadster will have a hardtop that can be put in place in one or two sections to protect the interior and the passengers from any inclement weather, such is the case with the Lamborghini Aventador Roadster.

The Huracan Spyder and The Aventador Roadster

With the latest Lamborghini models, namely the Aventador and the Huracan, both Roadster and Spyder are used to designate specific models. This is because both Lamborghini supercars have different temporary tops.

Huracan

The Huracan Spyder has a soft top that unfolds over the cabin with the touch of a button, and goes back just as easily. It’s available in the colors: black, brown, and red.

Aventador

The Aventador Roadster on the other hand has a hardtop that is stored under the hood, and quickly snaps into place in two pieces. This two-piece hardtop comes standard with the Roadster and is available in three colors: glossy black, carbon, or standard, which is similar to a matte black.
