How Do Vehicle Airbags Work?

Airbags are an important feature of every new vehicle, but it’s important to be sure that they are in working order whenever you hit the road. The airbag itself is made from a thin nylon, and is folded carefully into the side panels and steering wheel. There is also a sensor that measures the force of your vehicle, and will trigger the airbag deployment whenever a collision occurs.

The other part of the airbag is the actual inflation system. When the sensor triggers deployment, the airbag system releases sodium azide and potassium nitrate. When combined, those two chemicals react to produce a sudden burst of hot nitrogen gas. The gas inflates the bag quickly and then leaks out of holes in the bag after the collision.

Because the chemical reaction can only happen once, and the bags themselves are unsafe after they are deployed, it’s important to have them fully replaced after each deployment.
